Philip Taylor is a banking and financial services lawyer who advises lenders on structuring, negotiating, and closing financing transactions efficiently, strategically, and with as little friction as possible. As Managing Partner of Chaitons LLP, he acts primarily for banks, credit unions, institutional lenders, private lenders, funds, and family offices across a broad range of financing matters. Clients retain Philip not only for technical financing advice, but because he understands how lending businesses operate and helps them keep transactions moving while managing risk in a practical, commercially sensible way.

His practice includes asset-based, secured and unsecured, mezzanine, subordinated, distressed, real estate, and construction financings, as well as debt restructurings, distressed situations, and security enforcement. He is particularly experienced in mid-market matters, where responsiveness, practical judgment, and efficient execution are often just as important as the documents themselves. Philip works with a broad range of lender types and financing structures, bringing clarity and discipline to transactions that may involve multiple parties, layered priorities, or time-sensitive issues.

Philip is known for being a steady, accessible advisor who combines strong technical knowledge with a clear understanding of his clients’ operational realities. In addition to structuring and documenting transactions, he often helps clients refine internal processes, standardize documentation, and create more efficient approaches to recurring lending work. That blend of legal and operational insight is a large part of what makes him a valued long-term advisor to lending teams.

Philip is the firm’s Managing Partner and a member of the Executive Committee. He obtained his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1995 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1997. He is recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory for his work in asset-based lending, and he is a frequent speaker on lending-related issues. Outside the office, he is a former President of the Alpine Ski Club, where he served on the board for many years and led a major capital project.
