Maya’s areas of expertise span litigation, bankruptcy and insolvency. Her practice focuses on general commercial litigation and insolvency and restructuring, with an emphasis on receiverships, liquidations and securities enforcement and reorganizations under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Personal Property Security Act. Maya advises debtors, secured and unsecured creditors, court-appointed officers, purchasers, financiers and other major stakeholders on domestic and cross-border insolvency and restructuring matters. She appears regularly before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, including the Commercial List and has appeared as counsel at all levels of the Ontario courts.
Outside of the office Maya is involved in numerous organizations related to her work. Maya serves on the board of the Turnaround Management Association and the Ontario Bar Association’s Insolvency Chapter.
Maya is widely recognized for her expertise within the business and legal communities. She was recognized as a leading insolvency litigation lawyer in the Canadian Legal Lexpert directory. Maya regularly speaks at continuing legal education programs for lawyers and restructuring professionals.
Within the firm Maya frequently acts as a mentor to the firm’s students and associates. She is also the co-chair of the firm’s student program responsible for recruiting and managing the firm’s summer and articling students.
Maya received her J.D. (Hons.) from the University of Ottawa in 2006. She also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from York University’s Schulich School of Business. She was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2007.
